Politics: Immigration: President Bush To Temporarily Post National Guard On Mexican Border

"The president made clear that the United States considers Mexico a friend and that what is being considered is not militarization of the border but support of Border Patrol capabilities on a temporary basis by National Guard personnel," White House spokesperson Maria Tamburri said this weekend in advance of the president's address Monday.

At least one prominent Republican, Nebraska's Senator Chuck Hagel, expressed concern during an appearance on ABC's This Week on Sunday.

"That's not the role of our military. That's not the role of our National Guard," Senator Hagel warned, adding "That's a short-term fix, and I'm not sure that's a very wise fix."

"We have stretched our military as thin as we have ever seen it in modern times," Senator Hagel cautioned. "And what in the world are we talking about here, sending a National Guard that we may not have any capacity to send, up to or down to protect borders?"
