City Wide Wifi Networks In Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Chicago

All of these cities are in the final runds of approval for what would be the first major U.S. city wide wireless WIFI data networks. New York is also looking at the possibilty of providing this.

The world's largest municipal wireless rollout was in Taipei, Taiwan with 60,000 registered users on over 3,300 access points in 50 square mile area.

Houston has compromised and siad the wi-fi only needs to reach into perimeter rooms and up to the second floor. For greater coverage, some are waiting for [WiMax]Create?.

Earthlink will spend $10-$15 million to put access points in Philadelphia, and will depend on people willing to pay for access.

Chicago is trying to create a 228 square mile hot-spot.

Pennsylvania passed a law pushed by Verizon that allows local carriers the right to block cities from setting up wifi services.

Metricom had citywide wireless networks available back in 1995.
