Armstrong and Getty show says that one of their listeners, Kevin, received the following answer (1/17/07):
  • Dear Kevin: Thank you for contacting customer relations. We appreciate your concern for travellers depicted in television coverage. The airports struggled with this issue, and we had to divert more flights than we had ever done before. We know that many of our customers were feeling the impact i the next day. As hard as we try to respect our customer's time, It just wasn't possible to operate our flights on time on December 29. You can be sure that we are carefully reviewing our operational reports from that day looking for further ways to improve our contigency planning....
  • Jane A. Knight, American Airlines
Armstrong and Getty respond:
  • "The complaint isn't the delays, it's the fact that you kept them prisoner on a plane for 8 hours! Ask your pilot who was begging to dock the plane at a gate. Why not try this with a friend or a date, and keep them in the car for 8 hours, because it's not convenient to let them out. See what kinds of charges the authorities come up with. Then pin the plastic wings to your chest, claim you are with American airlines, and that it wasn't possible to get them home on time."
When you have a bunch of people stranded for hours on end with no working toilets, no water, no snacks, unless you are a psychopath, your human response is "My God, we have to get these people out of there." But then some kind of corporate think goes into effect that worries about statistics, how many departures and arrivals are on time, etc., and someone who is going to get a bonus based on the percentage, decides he's not going to blow the percentage, and that they are going to leave the people on the tarmac anyhow.

Maybe the milk of human kindness has turned to cottage cheese on their shelf.

Even if they had perfectly working toilets, etc., you can't just keep people prisoner like this.

Armstrong and Getty wants to sponsor a law that for every hour over 90 minutes that people are held in a plane like that, the pilots, stewardesses, etc., the entire air crew, spends a year in jail for every hour.
