Google Desktop Search - Is It A Security Risk Or A Productivity Boon

Google Desktop Search is designed to help computer users find their documents and data. It indexes documents, past web searches, zip files, emails (from Outlook, GMail, Netscape Thunderbird and Mozilla), and instant message strings. The latest version 3 includes "Search Across Computers" to allow any computer with the latest Google Desktop Search to search the files on that machine. Version 2 was already able to deal with RSS feeds.

Users are demanding easy to use search experience. The latest version let people access home and work data from either place.

Many people feel it posed a security risk for installation on the work dektop. It may even break the law in some regulated industries such as legal. finance or medical. Google responded with a version fine tuned for business environments, Google Desktop 3 for the Enterprise. It has tools for centralized IT control.

Some law firms restrict any downloads to desktops, and provide content-management systems that they feel will meet the attorney's needs.
