Internet Gambling Prohibition Act

Introduced on Feb 16, 2006 by Representative Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and Rick Boucher, D-Va., with more than 100 congressmen as cosponsors.

The last attempt at a bill like this got scuttled by Jack Abramoff, the now infamous Republican lobbyist who represented several American Indian tribes. He has pled guilty to criminal charges in a bribery probe.

Facts about online gambling:

  • Online gambling is now something like a $10 billion business. Some kids use it to buy their books at college. Most online gambling revenue goes to offshore companies in England, or the Caribean. The states wish they could get part of that revenue with taxes.
