    • Robert Kaplan, author of The Nothing That Is: A Natural History of Zero
    • The first evidence we have of zero is from the Sumerian culture in Mesopotamia, some 5,000 years ago. There, a slanted double wedge was inserted between cuneiform symbols for numbers, written positionally, to indicate the absence of a number in a place (as we would write 102, the '0' indicating no digit in the tens column).
    • TIMELINE shows the development of zero throughout the world. The first recorded zero appeared in Mesopotamia around 3 B.C. The Mayans invented it independently circa 4 A.D. It was later devised in India in the mid-fifth century, spread to Cambodia near the end of the seventh century, and into China and the Islamic countries at the end of the eighth. Zero reached western Europe in the 12th century.
    • Travelled from Sumerians, to Babylonian empire, to the Greeks, to India. Arabs found zero in India and brought it to the west.
    • Mathematical zero and philosophical notion of zero are related, but not the same.

    • Flightmare in Dallas - A 3 1/2 hour American Airlines flight forced to endure additional eight hours sitting on the tarmac at an alternate airport. They ran out of water, snacks, and the toilets were clogged.

    • Worst product that can get you arrested and ruin your PC: Kazaa 3 - The latest version of Kazaa's P2P file-sharing app is loaded with all the fixins! Unfortunately, those fixins include system-gumming spyware, ridiculous flashing ads, and useless toolbars. Is the RIAA in on this? It should be, because this P2P app is the best argument against illegal downloading we've ever seen.
    • Worst-rated product that CNET readers love: Nokia 770 Internet Tablet - This thing, it surfs Internet. You want to make phone call? You can't make phone call. You like Ethernet? No Ethernet. You get Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is nice. No wires! You like slow load times? Yes? It is good for that. You like battery that lasts more than three hours? It does not have one. Nice screen, though.

  • Border town fearing influx of U.S. troops - http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/anderson.cooper.360/blog/2006/05/us-border-town-fears-influx-of-troops.html
    • Sensationalized story talking about death of an innocent(?) civilian at the hands of Marines who were helping patrol the border. The man appears to have shot at the marines, but the family claims he didn't know that they were there hiding in the underbrush, he actually thought he was shooting at some kind of varmit that might bother his flock. The story also tries to blur the border, claiming families lived stretched on either side of the border, and how they "talk the same, look the same" on either side of the border... Most comments on this story highlight the frustration that most Americans feel with illegal immigration, and how, despite the concerns of leftist media types, Americans feel that we need to be willing to pay a cost to have a secure border.
